Rompin Sailfish 25 & 26th June

Another sailfish trip last week. This time our customer is Mr. Victor Seah from Nestle Malaysia with his son Timothy and Dato' T Jasudasen (High Commissioner For Republic Of Singapore). Our first day trip was not so good because of strong wind and the sea was choppy. No sailfish around and we are forced to leave sailfish ground early because of weather condition are getting worst on the evening. On Sunday the sea ondition is getting better and calm. Other than sailfish we caught a nice size Spanish Mackerel and a Queen Fish. Here some picture from our trip.

After few minute we change to another spot and a sailfish taking a bait. This sail give a good fight and jump few time for first few minute until it tangled itself to the mainline.

It's been a while since I last update this blog. Got to put new posting since I don't have any materiel I can share about jigging and popping. Why not I share our trip report from Go Fishing Malaysia fishing guide trip. I got the privilege to be their fishing guide. We have a good fishing trip even thou only 1 sailfish is landed because in April is to early for sailfish fishing.

Popping tips

I read this tips on sport fishing magazine. All the credit goes to the writer. Just want to share to all enthusiast topwater anglers.

Know when bigger is better – and when it isn’t.

For many situations, a popper can’t be too big or too noisy. For example, calling up fish from a reef requires you to get their attention. However, even for large yellowfin often smaller topwaters work more effectively, generally because that reflects the size of prey they’re feeding on.

Hey, not so fast !

Part of being skilled popper angler means knowing when to rip a lure along the surface at top speed – as is the case to persuade fast-moving pelagic like wahoo and mahi-mahi to strike – and when to slow it down. Some species prefer frequent or long pregnant pauses between pops. Don’t hesitate to vary your retrieve speed.

Change your rod angle

Pop ‘em high, pop ‘em low – how you hold the rod will definitelyaffect the action of a topwater. Many variables determine what best, including target species, situation (depth, water clarity & etc), type of topwaters and so on. Again, don’t hesitate to vary your rod retrieve angle.

Be rigged and ready to throw !

That’s hard to overemphasize. Almost no matter where a boat happens to be, odds are good for predators to show up at some point where you or someone aboard will see them. Often it’s enpassant, though and thesnoozers are the losers. Being able to grab your rod and toss a topwaters in the path of moving game fish gives you a good shoot at a hookup. This includes offshore, where sighting floatsam 100 feet of the bow calls for a rapid response.

Put on gloves !

This doesn’t mean cutoff fingers, either – at least not the index finger of your right hand (unless you’re lefty) when throwing big, heavy poppers on heavy braided line all day long. You need that finger, which continually pick up line from the bail, protected inside a glove.

Go your own way

When throwing a surface lure into frantic baitfish, try to crank it back so it moves in a direction different from scattering baitfish. Like a stray or wounded baitfish saperated from the baitball. It will get more attention !

I have been fishing in the area of oil rigs in 2 times and I often wondered how it looks like beneath the under water near the platform. Finally I found a nice video to answer my curiosity.

This nice video shown a whale shark swimming around the oil rig and a lot's of Giant Trevally follow underneath the whale shark. Next time when i see a whale shark i will know where to cast my jigs. Hehehe

AG Chain Knot : Strongest knot for Florocarbon Leader

One of our forumer post this info how to tie the strongest knot for carbon leader. This is the step by step picture how tie this knot and it damn easy.

1-Insert a hollow kevlar to protect the knot from any sharp edge

2- Tie a half hitch knot


3-Continue tie half hitch knot like tying ending for FG knot


4- This is how it look like


5- Tighten the knot with 120 degree angle


6- Do the half hitch knot around 30 times

7- This is the how the knot look like

In this video they try the strength of AG Knot with the other knot. I hope this knot can be applied for popping technique to. Will try on this Saturday for my jigging & popping trip at Pulai Oil Rig. See you all next week.

Live Bait Drifting & Trolling:
A multiplier with capacity at least 250 meters 50lb mainline.
60lb to 80lb leader. Florocarbon leader will be better.
Circle hook for live bait drifting.
A suitable rod

A suitable reel. (recommended daiwa reel size 4500 and above or shimano reel size 6000)
Popper or pencil around 10 to 15 cm

Right now i'm more enthusiast in popping than jigging. Since my last 3 fishing trip, I didn't get any single hook up on jigs but always on a popper. Maybe my jigging skill getting rusted or i don't know how to jigging anymore hahaha. On my last trip to Port Dickson for light jigging i get a bite by a black tip shark (less than 10kg i think) but using only my PE2-4 Expert Graphite Custom rod & 70gram Budi Popper, I cannot strike and set up the hook properly. But surprising a black tip shark also getting keen to a popper. Enough of that.. I want to introduce to all my blog reader to a new handmade popper.

This popper was made by Edi Leadhunter. He is quite well-known in surfcast fishing. Also a Malaysian record holder distance surfcasting. Even thou he not into popping but his handmade popper is quite good and the finishing is equal to well know popper. He used mahogany & shorea wood. A nice hardwood (I like to use a wood popper than a plastic). Although is not fully tested yet but i'm looking forward to use this popper on my coming trip with my new custom popping rod. InsyaAllah if i can afford the flight ticket and etc... Hehehehe

A One Year Annivesary & Fishing Trip

8th August is a one year anniversary me with my girlfriend... What should i do for this this event ?? Want to take her to movie ? take out for dinner ? Ahh.. it's all boring. Why shouldn't i take her for a fishing trip... Haha then she agreed. She want to know why i'm addicted to fishing.. So we make our journey to Kuala Rompin Pahang for another sailfish hunting trip. I want her to experience how to tackle a big fish. By the way, Thanks to Mahadzir aka Kikilala, Rambo & Reza for letting us joint this trip.. I really appreciate it :)

Early in the morning we didn't see any sailfish around so we decide to do some bottom fishing. She landed a nice size red snapper hehe..

Around 2pm we try again to hunt some sailfish. I start rig the livebait and drift it away hope there any sailfish will take it and give to my gf to handle it. Meanwhile i start popping in front of the boat. After few pops a good size of sailfish hits my popper.

After few minute another sailfish taken Rambo live baits. A double hook...

I manage land the sailfish first to give way to Rambo to have more space for fighting with the fish.

My 2nd Sailfish landed... But this time on popper !!

Rambo looks like he has been efected with parkinson syndrome hahaha...

After that we keep on drifting the livebait, got a few strike but none really hook up very well... Then wind start getting strong and the rain start comming down... Boatman said we have to go back to jetty. Sorry my dear.. Look like i have to take her for another fishing trip. And she said it's ok... She will try until she land her own sailfish...

Sailfish Hunt At Rompin

Fuhh... quite a long time i didn't update anything in my blog. I have been busy & too lazy to write anything... heeee...

On 12 June, our team have organize one trip to Kuala Rompin Pahang. Kuala Rompin is really famous for sailfish hunting. Normally sailfish season starting from August to November. But we just try our luck on this time. In August they normally organize a Royal Pahang International Billfish Challenge. A lots of international team participate in this tourney.

Along this trip 4 sailfish is landed. We using live bait drifting technique with balloon. Circle hook around size 5/0 to 7/0 is recommended. We also try to use artificial bait like lure & popper. Got a few strike but none is really get solid hook up. Here some photo for all my blog reader..

KPN akan mengambil satu lokasi di Batu 12, Sungai Pinang sebagai lokasi kita untuk aktiviti 7 Jun ini nanti untuk kesinambungan River Cleaning KPN Disember tahun lepas. Dalam masa dan hari yang sama, sebuah persatuan iaitu KAGUM ( KELAH ASSOCIATION OF MALAYSIA – PERSATUAN PEMULIHARAAN KELAH MALAYSIA - 0154-08-SEL) atau nama lama - Kelah Action Group Of Malaysia.juga akan mengadakan aktiviti serentak di beberapa lokasi oleh beberapa kumpulan di seluruh malaysia.

Antara yang telah dimasukkan ke dalam kalendar KAGUM bagi tahun 2009 ini adalah
Mini National River Cleaning 2009. 7hb Jun telah dipilih bagi aktiviti ini dan beberapa lokasi telahpun dikenalpasti. Acara ini akan disertai oleh: KPN, Team Longkang dari P.Pinang, PAW dari Kuantan, Ahli dari Petronas, TNB dan beberapa individu serta badan amal lain.

It's nearly 1 month i didn't post anything in my blog, I'm quite busy with my project in melaka. Stayed at Jassin. After 9.00pm, every shop has been closed. The nearest cybercafe is nearlly 10km away..

But now i have a new toys to play for my comming fishing trip. In the recent trip i have lost one of my favorite popper but now i have 3 new one... hehehe.. I also have some stock for sell to anyone interested.

Budi popper is a quite famous & equally goog like Adhek Bali popper but cost cheaper. I always like to use popper made out from wood than plastic popper..

Shimano Butterfly Jigging Techniques

My objective to upload this post is try to give a general idea how jigs react under the water. Same like a lure casting, jigging also involve your creativity. How to present your jig to attract a fish. This Shimano butterfly technique also can be applied to a similar shape jig.

Jigging Technique from a Drifting Boat

The Butterfly Jigging System uses tackle designed to attract and detect bites from even the most finicky of fish. It's an action/reaction system designed to allow you to savor the invigorating feel of every movement while retrieving the lure. The feel of the bite is similar to the feeling of electricity flowing through the rod with every movement of the fish exaggerated, due to the sensitivity of the tackle.

Follow These Steps

1. Cast the Butterfly Jig down the current, wind, or drift direction.

2. Let the jig sink to the bottom.

3. Begin retrieving with jigging technique motion.

4. Retrieve the jig several yards from the bottom.

5. Let the jig sink to the bottom (Repeat steps 4 & 5 several times with each cast).

6. Once line is even, or under the boat, retrieve the jig and cast down the current or wind to start process over.

Butterfly - Regular/Flat-Side
Jigging Action: The Butterfly technique requires a precise motion to impart the right fish catching action to the jig. This technique works for both conventional and spinning tackle with the same results.

After the jig is dropped to the desired depth, the rod tip is facing down. With an upward circular motion, the rod tip will be lifted up on the upswing on the reel handle and lowered on the downstroke of the rotation. The reel retrieve is a tight circular motion that is close to the body with the rod butt held loosely under your left armpit. The distance in which the rod tip moves from top to bottom is approximately 10 to 20 inches depending on the desired lure action and retrieval speed. This technique will work on a fast or slow retrieve depending on how the fish are reacting.

Butterfly - Long
Jigging Action: The Butterfly Long Jig is a very productive lure and works well with the standard jigging technique outlined previously, as well as the following Long jig technique explained below.

The Long model jigging technique works with both spinning and conventional tackle. This technique requires the rod butt held loosely under your armpit depending on what type of tackle (spinning or conventional). After the jig reaches its desired depth, the rod tip is facing down. With an upward jerking motion, bring the rod tip up to the 11 o'clock position. Once up there, wind down taking up the slack in the line until it comes tight, which will lower the rod into the starting position then repeat as previously described. You can adjust the speed of retrieve depending on how the fish react.

Custom Angler Part (Power Handle, Knob, Spool etc)

I never satisfied with original reel handle & knob. Sometimes the original handle and knob are small. A lots of my reel i change it to custom power handle & knob. It give more grip & feeling more comfortable. Luckily I got a good friend "Azhar" also my fishing buddies are doing some custom job for reel and etc... I show all his handicraft (or should i say machine craft ?) on this post.

My Shimano Stella SW 8000 PG with custom T- Bar handle. So comfort when I jigging & popping. This T-Bar is a copied version of Jigging Master T-Bar knob. By the way my friend custom handle & knob is cost more cheeper than Jigging Master :)

My Daiwa Exceler Occeano 4500J. I called it mini dogfight (Still can't afford a real Saltiga Dogfight. Hehehe) i still got a few custom job to do with this reel.

Jernih Oil Ring Trip (Part 1)

I just get back from an unexpected trip. Last week on tuesday on of my friend calling me asking if i'm not busy from 11 to 14 of April. I said i'm free and he asking if i want to go for a oil rig fishing trip to replace his friend (can't get annual leave). I told him.. "are u crazy ?? I don't have any electric reel & i kinda short on cash..." And he said "Never mind... you just go, i will cover your expense on this trip" I said "hmm.. ok. I on it...." But this trip is more on bottom fishing trip. We abort on 11th april 3.00 pm. We charter a famous "tekong" Pak Itam.

I use a 8' 6" popping rod, Daiwa Exceler Oceano 4500J reel & my favorite Bali popper. 1 strike on GT doesn't hook up properly. I lost The Gt's in the middle of fight. 2nd hook up it's a nice hook up but the my 30lbs tuffline mainline cannot stand the preasure of the GT's and it's snap. Clearly I underestimate the power of the GT. The GT's take away my favorite popper... Uwaaaaa....

My Favorite Bali Popper... A good popper with large mouth, make a nice spalsh on on the water surface. Easy to cast. Weight around 60-70 grams.

I change to my Shimano Stella SW 8000 PG loaded with 50lbs Tuffline and Halco Rosta popper. 3rd strike of GT.

My VMC 4X treble hook cannot stand the preasure and the hook bent. I guess it's a big size of GT. My stella keep on giving away the mainline.

From Kuala Besut's jetty it took 8 hours for Pak Itam's boat to reach Jernih Oil Rig with average speed 7.5 knot. By the way this place is the nearest oil rig from main land.

We arrived around 2.00 to 3.00 in the morning. Bad thing is, our tekong, Pak Itam parked his boat quite far from oil rig. We all started to bottom-fishing whilst i started to cast my jig but we only able to land few small pelagic fish dan few Barracuda.

In the morning some one landed a GT by bottom fishing.. This is a chance for me to cast my popper... Sure you know the result already.. Sigh.. I still missed my popper. After lunch we stop at few spot on the way to Red Snapper fishing ground. We caught few cobia, grouper and other small fish.

We arrived at Red Snapper spot at dawn and Abuya landed the first Rad snapper for the trip. Even though it weight around 2 or 3 kg but the way the fish fight is quite impressive.

What Jig Color I Should Use ?

Color reacts differently based on how light penetrates the water. There are a lot of variables that have an affect on the depth/jig color equation. Sunny day or cloudy day, position of the sun(time of day), calm day or choppy day, and water color.

Knowing the type of fish is important, are they day feeder or night-feeders? Obviously this will be your first step in selecting a color. At night you'll need something that will catch a night feeders attention more rapidly, and during the day, the day feeder lure choice will need to be catchy and vibrant that will catch the light and draw attention.

These depths are not set in stone. All they are is a guide. The actual depther the color is visible at is directly affected by the above variables.

RED will be visible from 0 Feet - 30 Feet
ORANGE will be visible from 0 Feet - 45 Feet
YELLOW will be visible from 0 Feet - 60 Feet
GREEN will be visible from 0 Feet- 80 Feet
BLUE will be visible from 0 Feet - 100 Feet
PURPLE will be visible from 0 Feet - 120 Feet
Chrome Or Silver will be visible from 0 Feet - above 120 Feet

Now, light behaves a bit differently once it penetrates the water. Longer wavelengths are reds, then oranges, yellows, greens, blues, indigos, and violets. These are absorbed first once hitting the water. These colors tend to fade out and appear black or silver as the light hits the water. Red light is almost totally absorbed within the first 15-20 feet. Orange penetrates about 45 feet, and yellow goes about 60 feet. Green and blue may travel as deep as the light goes. The total amount of light also decreases as it hit the water and travels down. Quite simply, the brightness changes.

Generally what happens when you fish a color deeper than the depth it will show, it becomes black or gray depending on the lure color. Glow in the dark or luminous jig will help in the deeper depths.

Russian Wreck Trip

This trip was on13 to15 Febuary before I went to Pulau Jarak trip. Russian Shipwreck is located Pulau Pinang. It's take approximately 2 hour to reach by Fishing Boat. For this trip we are using Tekong Ah Chuan boat like last year. It's also a wonderful trip cause few of my friend in Kakipancing.Net forum are joining this trip. cause is so back dated i just put few picture in this post.

On the first day we are heading to "Karang 06" fishing spot to do bottom fishing. Last time we go there we manage to land 11 golden snapper on that trip. But this time luck not our side. The current was way to strong. Few small size fish we land in the evening and only 2 golden snapper was landed on that night

A lots of our trip member admitted in "emergency room" cause of seasickness. Early in the morning the wind became calmer and we headed to russian wreck. This spot have a lots of mackeral, golden snapper, GT and many pelagic fish. Two hours later when we arrive we se a lots of fish boiling in the sea surface. We start using light jig to jig cast and we start getting result.

My friend "Nestrules" got a first bite but his shock leader has been snip. It's must be a mackarel i think. Then I got a hook up using a 60 grams Jazz pink jig.

I land a medium size of mackeral. It about 5kg and the others also start having a bite on their jig.

We doesn't take enough foto.. busy with jig, popping and fish boiling.. hahaha. And at dawn "nestrules" got a GT using hisPE0.85 - 2 rod with daiwa 2500 Fream Kix. The GT really give a good fight with light rod

Around 3.00 am, Captian Ah Ho start the engine bot and headed to Pulau Sembilan area. We arrive to the first stop at Pulau Batu Putih around 7.00 am.

Came all the way from singapore for fishing and went back by taxi... You guys are great. Also thanks to my jigging buddies Kikilala for inviting me for this trip. Jigging at Pulau Jarak (Day 2)

On the 2nd day, we continue jigging after sleep for few hour last night. Daniel start up the morning show with a Blue Fin GT's These GT give a good fight..

In the later part of the morning, captain ah ho move his bot to a nice coral spot Fred & Yu Hock at the infront of the boat begin popping & lure casting. Almost simultaneously Fred & Yu Hock get a double strike.

Around 11.30 am, Captain Ah Ho bring us to a few spot for deepwater jigging but no one get any hook up. Captain Ah Ho suggest to us to go to deeper spot. Just short while we have 3 strike in a row.

Jigging at Pulau Jarak (Day 1)

Located 34km southwest of the town of Lumut, Perak, is Pulau Jarak, Malaysia's latest dive destination. This tiny island (barely 8 hectares in size) rises 50m above sea level and is covered with lush vegetation, where many sea eagles nest. There is no beach on Pulau Jarak, only granite sloping down to the sandy sea bed with small patches of stony, encrusting and soft corals. Its also a famous spot for jigging. I went to Pulau Jarak last Febuary for 3 days 2 night trip.

Daniel, Fred & Yu Hock are doing field test some new jigs from Williamson and new lure from Rapala. These jig will be out in market in the end of april or early may this year.

After 20 minute later Captain Ah Ho moved to another spot. Shortly once again daniel caught a golden snapper using williamson abbys 200 gram jig.

After that we doesn't get any hook up until dusk approaching, we headed towards Pulau Jarak and anchored for the night. Not long after dinner, Me and kikilala started our 'night shift'. First hook up for me is a small baby GT. I didn't take any picture and release it back... Then Kikilala start landing a nice size of GT.

Yet i got another hook up, quite big size of GT (i think hahaha) using a river 2 sea jig look like an anchovies but my 20lbs mainline with 50lbs shock leader cannot withstand the presure from the GT's at the end of the line. The GT's manage to run in the coral and my shock leader is snap.

Not satisfied with the earlier GT that i loose, i use a blue fox hering jig and i got a hook up..

Fuh.. i'm so happy manage to landing this GT on a light tackle. Me, Kikilala and Fred still continue our "night shift" and got few hook up more.

Two jigs rigged as one will give more action and increase percentage to catch more fish ?

Last time i read from another blog from New Zealand. This guy name Bish has try using a 2 jigs and rigged with a split ring and he catch more fish then using a single jigs. I quoted from his blog

"So I tried it, several times, and I became a convert. Now when I am out jigging for snapper, kingfish or hapuku (grouper), I use nothing else, such is the success rates it has produced for me and my 'converts'.

So what is the method? It is simply joining two jigs together, using split rings. The picture will make it clearer that any explanation I might try to write. The jigs can be the same size, or one bigger than the other. If one jig is bigger, the smaller jig is usually the bottom jig (although placing the smaller jig on top still works).

I use a single hook on the bottom jig, always loaded with a soft plastic bait as shown. But in the US they often use a single hook tied to the top jig's, top wire loop, as well as the bottom jig. I have not noticed any lack of hook-ups by not having the second top hook, and sure do not have any of the hassles that can arise when trying to land a fish with a loose second hook flying around.

But a friend of mine who I converted to twin-jigs has gone the hook on the top of the top lure way, without a hook on the bottom jig, and he does not seem to miss many hits either.

Some who use twin jigs even add a third hook to the join between the jigs. Way too many sharp pointy bits for this lad, and watching the way the jigs move I am sure tangles would be a problem. But I have not tried it, so it is your call. Bet your tackle store owner wants you to try it though - two jigs, three hooks, plus some line, all gone with every hook-up on the bottom. I can hear the cash register beeping in glee from here.

Whichever number of hooks way you go, going the wicked way of the treble-hook is not really an option. I am sure there would be too many hook-ups on the line. You cannot use a soft bait either, which is a definite minus. Besides, some of my readers will be aware of my 'crusade' to get treble hooks banned. They damage too many fish and anglers - end of preaching."

4- Select your rod

Congratulations!! You finally come to the last article of the series and you can shop around for your jigging tackle after you read this.

The last part of the series is to give you some information about jigging rods.

Jigging rods available in Australia are still relatively in small range compare to overseas market particularly Japan but we have much better and wider selection than before.

Major suppliers for these rods are still Daiwa and Shimano and we can get Daiwa's Saltiga and Saltist and Shimano's Blue Rose, Jig Wrex and TCurve at the time of this article. There are also some rods from other manufactures and custom rod factories available.

When you select your jigging rods, you need to read a couple of information labeled on the rod.

They are normally jig weight and line weight information and some rods also have maximum drag information.

Jig weight

This information is similar to cast lure weight on casting rods and it shows jig weight range to be used with the rod. If it is labeled as jig weight 150 - 200g, this mean manufacture recommends angler to use jigs between 150g-200g in weight. So what will happen to the rod if someone use 300g jig with that rod???..........Most likely nothing.

This information only indicates the best jig weight that the rod will give best action for and it is not breaking strength or anything. Generally, 50 - 80g heavier jigs on top of maximum jig weight can be used and they are still actioned well. This is depending on the shape of the jigs you use and it can be even heavier with centre weight long shape jigs which usually receive less pressure from water. In the worst case, jigs just doesn't swim in good action and the rod shouldn't be broken because of heavier jigs even you double the maximum jig weight. The reason is that unlike casting rods, jigging rods is always actioned in similar angle to the rod movement when angler fights for the fish and most of jigging rods are for big fish like 10kg a GT for example and there shouldn't be any problem with heavy jigs.

Line weight

This information sometime confuse angler as there are deferent breaking strength available in same PE grade.

If your rod has maximum drag information on it then you don't have to worry about this too much. You just have to make sure not using too light line from maximum PE grade as it sometimes cause line breaking.

If your rod doesn't have above information then use the following format to find maximum drag setting on your rod.

Maximum PE grade X 10 X 35% X 0.45

Recommended drag setting is 25-35 % of your main line’s breaking strength, and please replace above 35% with your preference.
0.45 is to convert lb to kg.

It is recommended that you follow this information or setting from above calculation.

You need to understand that your rod gets weaker as you stand it up and if you ever need to give an extra pressure exceeding this during your fight, make sure you control your rod to be as close as water.

3- Select your reel

When you became familiar with PE line grade, to select right size of reel won’t be too difficult.

Below table shows line capacity of the reels in each size for two popular Japanese jigging reel manufactures - Daiwa and Shimano and hope you will find the right size reel for yourself based on the line you use.

With spinning reels for each manufacture, spools in the same colour group are basically compatible (They have to be the same models). This means that you can use Daiwa 4000 size spool on 4500 size reel or the other way around. Or you can stock PE4/300m line on Shimano Stella 6000FA by using 8000 size spool if you prefer high gear reel.

With overhead reels, spools are not compatible between each reel and you must choose right or larger size reel.

Hope you have an idea about the size of your reel by now and this time we'll give you some information about jigging reels.

I explained about the reel capacities first in previous article because it was just a way I normally select my reels. I often select line first as it is very important for jigging to me then I look for what reels are available in that size. With this way, I'm able to keep my reels as small (light) as possible to save my energy to give my jigs actioned all day. Some people may want to select reel first then decide its size and that is also fine. If you are thinking to purchase one reel only then you have to think about the scenario where you use the heaviest tackle.

More reels designed for deepwater jigging are become available in the last couple of years, especially from Daiwa and Shimano and we now have more to choose from.

At the time of this article, Saltiga Z, Saltiga Blast and Saltist from Daiwa and Stella and Sustain from Shimano are available in spinning reel range.

Daiwa brought almost same range of Saltiga z and Saltiga Blast reels as those on Japanese market (Saltist is not available in Japan) and Shimano supplies different models in overseas.

They have full range of salt water models of Shimano Stella and Twin Power in both high gear and power (low) gear models in Japan and there are also many budget jigging reels available in 6000-8000 size.

As we mentioned in general guide, you are able to use many other reels from these manufactures or from the others as long as you are comfortable to jig all day and fight for your target fish. For example, we saw many people use Shimano Spheros and seem to be capable for jigging. One important thing that I always make sure to have on my spinning reels is 'screwed-in' handle. Normal handle (the one tight the handle with nut on the other side) often become loose while I action my jigs.

With overhead reels, Saltiga and Saltist are available from Daiwa and Trinidad from Shimano.

They are basically similar to those on Japanese market except name (Trinidad reels are called 'Ocea Jigger' in Japan with minor functional difference. Power gear models and larger size models are also available.) Daiwa Saltist is also not available in Japanese market.

The narrow spool models seem to work better for many people as wide spool models are harder to keep your rod balanced while you action your jigs.

Still can't make your decision?

I guess you want to ask if you should get spinning reel or overhead reel. Or you may want to ask if you should get high gear model or power gear model.

I think this is a very large topic to cover them here and in fact, you will need to know some of the techniques and also need some experiences to understand it. We put them aside as they are all for different purpose or situation in deepwater jigging and we will come back to this topic sometime in the future and you should make your own judgment with your preference after having some jigging experiences.

However, as this article is suppose to give you some guidance to purchase your first jigging reel !!, I usually recommend people to purchase power(low) gear spinning model for their first jigging reel. There are a couple of reasons for this...

The reasons to choose spinning reel are:

Spinning reels are capable for more types of jigging actions than overhead reels.
Ability to swap handles on both right and left sides. With lure fishing, it is often better to use your dominant hand for the rod for better rod work and you are able to try both sides to see which works better for you or when your arm get tired.
Easier to fight for your target fish in some cases.
70-80% of anglers are using spinning tackle as their main jigging tackle.

The reasons to choose power gear model are:

Easier to build good jigging actions for the beginners.
Easier to fight for your target fish as it has more torque. To jig and fight for big fish all day with high gear reels is not easy as you think!

2- Select your mainline

It is important to understand PE line grade to select your line and this will be also important for you to select right rods and reels.

PE line’s breaking strength was simply ten times of this number in early stage and all anglers knew that PE4 was 40lb line and PE5 was 50lb line. PE line has been significantly improved since then however and you now have a choice of different strength in same diameter (PE4 line is available from 40lb to 60lb over) and this makes angler confused sometime in relation to the information on rods or reels.

Now how heavy does your PE line need to be?

Besides the size of your target fish, you may need to take two facts into your considerations.

With deepwater jigging, you often hook up fish at the bottom and many of our target fish tend to run in to rough bottom, reef or structure and damage your line. This is one of common reasons for line breaking in jigging and thicker line will be more durable against this damage regardless of your target fish. This means that you can use PE6-8 line for 10kg fish if you prefer.
Recommended drag setting is 25-35 % of your main line’s breaking strength. For example if you would like to have 10kg drag on your reel, you should go 70lb or heavier.

Generally people are using 50-60lb (PE4-5) line for target up to 15kg, 60-70lb (PE5-6) line for up to 25kg and 80lb (PE6-8) over for heavier target but same as other type of fishing, it is totally up to you and you can go lighter or heavier depending on your preference and skill level.

How many meters of PE line do you need to stock on your reel?

My recommendation is to have minimum 2.5 times of the water depth and this is calculated from (water depth + distance affected by the current + spare lines to fight for fish). For example if you fish where water depth is 70m then you will need minimum 175m of PE line or 300m for 120m area.

PE lines are normally sold on either 200m or 300m spool. Unless you are jigging in shallow water, I think it’s always better to purchase 300m spool even you may need less then 200m line from above calculation. Line often breaks in jigging for many reasons and you should be able to fish with the rest of line in most cases if you purchase 300m spool.

If you need more than 300m, some PE lines are available to purchase by 100m spool. (This doesn’t mean that you will join each 100m line. You can buy some PE lines multiple by 100m.) You can also purchase some lines in 300 or 600 meter bulk spool.

1- Where are you going for jigging?

You should be able to answer this question before you start to shop around for your jigging tackle. You should also need to know the water depth in that area, main target fish and these average size etc. It’s also handy to have the latest information about color of the water and bait fish information etc before the trip.

Water depth gives you general idea about:

Line capacity - > need this when you choose your reels and line.
Lure weight - > need this when you choose your rods and metal jigs.

Main target and size gives you general idea about:

Line size - > need this when you choose your rods and reels and line.
Lure action - > need this when you choose your rods and metal jigs (and reel).

Color of the water and bait fish information gives you general idea about:

Lure color - > need this when you choose your metal jigs.
Lure shape - > need this when you choose your metal jigs (and rod).

We basically start to combine above information and our preference. Some prefer lighter tackle and the others prefer heavier tackle.

Roughly in Malaysia we generally use from 40 to 300gram metal jig or even heavier one in some area and drop it to 70-150meters (some spot can reach 200 meters) then retrieve it back all day. Yes, we need to work on this all day long!! Otherwise we never catch any fish and this is obviously something different from other game fishing like big trolling game.

There a lots of choice of jigging equipment from low range and to high range rod & reel. It’s depends to the angler which one they prefer. Of course if you want a good equipment you have to spend more money.

Rods:

Ability to jig all day (Lighter in weight)
Designed for better jig action
Lighter yet ability to fight with big target fish

Reels:

Durable for hard jigging handle work
Strong and smooth drag performance
Ability to jig all day (Lighter in weight)

When we select tackle for jigging, we should always think about the best balance of above to not to be too light or overkill on both tackle’s ability and its physical weight.

Welcome to my Jigging blogs... I’m quite new writing in a blog but with this blog i try to give information about jigging to anglers who want to try jigging technique, how to select the right equipment for your basic jigging. Last time is very difficult to me to search or get information on jigging tackle, technique when i want to start jigging. Hope this blog will give much infomartion to newbie out there. Later I will try to add some more information or detail in my blogs.

Definition of jigging
Jigging can be described as dropping an appropriate weight metal jig resembling a bait fish to a specfic depth and retreiving using a rythmic jerking or pumping motion of the rod. This jerking motion coupled with the blade like shape of the jig itself makes the lure dart upwards, and flutter downwards like a fleeing or wounded bait fish enticing any nearby gamefish to bite.

To be done successfully jigging also requires a fair amount of rod work, knowledge of the seafloor topography, bait fish activity, currents, sea conditions, and coordination with the captain of the boat. Contrary to popular belief this type of angling can be more difficult than live lining or some other conventional method to catch the same target species. The reward for the physical and mental effort spent in jigging is with out a doubt the shear excitement of hooking into a large gamefish. When anglers talk about what it feels like to get a strike words like freight train, tank, and mac truck are often used.

How to jig?

For me jigging can be categories in 2 technique :

1) vertical jigging
Jigging is a coordinated effort between the captain of the boat and the anglers on board. The captain's responsibility is to locate fish or points likely to hold fish and then decide in what direction to approach them. When the boat arrives over a point the captain indicates the sea floor depth, and the depth he sees game or bait fish holding. He'll also tell the anglers the direction of the current relative to the bow of the boat and how fast it's moving. Depending on local regulations the captain may face the bow into the wind before allowing his anglers to start fishing.Usually we use jigs around 75 gram up to 250 (depends on the water depth & current)

2) Horizontal jigging

Usually i'll use this technique in situation when boat is anchored near to any island or coral reefs. Try to cast the jig nearly to the island and start retrieving jig by adding some jerk movements. I'll use jigs ranged from 20 to 75 grams depending on depth and water current. Using one-side weight jig will give numerous movement similar to injured bait fish.
